So when we think about “Self Image” a good starting question might be, what do you believe people think about you? The mental picture that you have developed of yourself depicts not only details that can be objectively investigated by others (what’s actually seen by the eye), it will also include ideas, notions and spurious beliefs that have been installed by you about yourself, either from personal experiences or by internalizing the judgments of others.
A healthy self-image allows us to feel capable and confident, self assured, and friendly; it also makes us more willing to try new things, have dreams and the courage to follow them.
The formation of a healthy self image though can be challenging, especially when family, peers, community, or social forces are negative or strongly manipulative. In these cases we will tend to see ourselves as inferior, incapable and more closed to the people and opportunities around us.
